The FD1+ fetal doppler has been tried at a number of different stages of pregnancy. First at 8 weeks, when much of the advertising around this unit states you can begin listening. This early listening are sometimes rewarded, and sometimes not : Finding the heartbeat this early depends on many factors only one being the quality of the doppler which in this case is not in question. Experience has shown that most reasons for not finding the heartbeat this early in pregnancy have to do with such factors as user error, position of the uterus, or a possible miscalculation of gestation. Following our 8 week exam tests have shown the unit every week for the next 32 and were extremely impressing with the results.
Durability
The FD1+ fetal doppler is made of a three piece casing of ABS polycarbonate alloy (front, back, and battery cover). The transducer fits securely into its recessed housing and is easy to extract. When the probe is put away the unit is very compact.
An US consumer organization (FACTS.org) review states : "..Holes in the front cover resemble buttons and work very well to protect the speaker and allow the sound to resonate. The volume control found on the side of the unit has a great range and is easy to adjust with a free finger while in use. We really liked the larger than normal size of the FHR (fetal heart rate) display which made the very concise readings extremely easy to read. The power button on the front lower left is large and makes turning the unit on & off a breeze..."

Note worthy features of the current production of the FD1+ fetal doppler is its standard waterproof probe which is very useful for water births. The FD1+ is the only fetal doppler on the market to offer this as a standard feature. The FD1+ has a low battery indicator which appears in the shape of a battery on the digital display when battery needs replacing. An automatic shut-off function comes in very handy for battery preservation. After one minute of no signal or 5 minutes continuous operation the unit automatically shuts down. The standard headphone jack found on the left side of the unit can be used for connection to a tape recorder or battery powered laptop computer for recording the fetal Doppler audio signal.
Doppler probes are now 50% more sensitiveassuring reliability and detection during early gestation and difficult cases. Increased impact protection on the probes, enhanced audio quality, and improved battery power management are additional qualities of these latest Doppler s. Three models now include waterproof protection: the D920; the D930; and the FD1+. While designed for use in water, these Doppler s also work very nicely out of water and protect the probe against all fluids.
